Gone with the Wind
Summer in South Florida hits differently. Especially peak summer time, which can start as early as May (no, I'm not joking). I can't tell you the number of times I've gotten in a car and almost burned by hands on the steering wheel because I forgot to put the heat shield up. I'm reminded every summer of a funny quote from Blaize Clement where she said, "August in Florida is God's way of reminding us who's in charge". It's Hot. So not unexpectedly, most Floridians usually do 1 of 2 things; they head to the water, for beach or boating, or they travel. Charleston, South Carolina has always peaked our interest, and this year, we decided to go for a visit. It can't be hotter there, right?
Some backstory on Charleston. Founded in 1670, Charleston, is steeped in deep-rooted history and timeless Southern charm. The city charms its visitors with its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages, and rows of pastel-colored antebellum houses that feel like they belong to another era. Strolling through Charleston is literally like stepping back in time, where every corner reveals architectural beauty, preserved heritage, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that defines the "Lowcountry" experience.
The Lowcountry is a distinct geographic and cultural region along the coast of South Carolina, stretching from Pawleys Island to Savannah, GA, renowned for its low-lying marshy landscape, and historic charm.

The Mount Pleasant / Charleston KOA campground offers a convenient and comfortable home base just 13 miles northeast of historic downtown Charleston. Nestled in a quieter, more suburban setting, the campground provides easy access to essential amenities, including a nearby Walmart Supercenter, Publix grocery store, and Mount Pleasant Hospital, making it both practical and well-situated for longer stays. Additionally, the campground itself is one of the best KOA's we've found. A large lake with excellent fishing (I personally watched two fisherman catch a 5.5 lb and 7 lb bass), a well maintained nature trail, multiple facilities for bathroom and showers, and it offers a discount to KOA members.
Beyond convenience, the surrounding Mount Pleasant area adds to the experience with a variety of shopping, dining, and local attractions that showcase its charm. Visitors can explore nearby boutiques, restaurants, and activities highlighted through resources like Explore Mount Pleasant shopping and attractions, giving plenty of opportunities to discover local flavor while still enjoying a relaxing campground atmosphere.
“Charleston is a city where the streets are lined with history, the food is cooked with love, and the scenery is simply breathtaking.”
What to See in Charleston
A visit to Fort Sumter National Monument offers a powerful glimpse into American history, as it is the site where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Accessible only by boat, the journey itself adds to the experience. Once there, visitors can explore the fort’s well-preserved ruins, walk along its walls, and take in sweeping harbor views while learning about the events that shaped the nation. The exhibits and ranger-led discussions provide rich context, making it both educational and deeply moving. On a personal note, while I'm a huge history geek, the ferry over there was a little pricey at $40 per person for the 30-minute trip.
Equally iconic is Rainbow Row, one of Charleston’s most photographed landmarks. This series of thirteen brightly colored historic homes along East Bay Street showcases the city’s vibrant yet refined aesthetic. Originally built in the 18th century and later restored, these pastel facades symbolize Charleston’s commitment to preservation. A leisurely walk past Rainbow Row feels picturesque at every step, especially in the soft glow of the morning or late afternoon light.
At the southern tip of the peninsula lies The Battery & White Point Garden, a stunning waterfront promenade lined with grand historic mansions and shaded by ancient oak trees. The area offers breathtaking views of Charleston Harbor and Fort Sumter in the distance. White Point Garden, with its Civil War cannons and peaceful pathways, invites visitors to relax, reflect, and enjoy the coastal breeze while surrounded by layers of history. The gazebo and moss-covered oak trees create a picturesque and photogenic setting that’s truly stunning. White Point Garden opens 7am every day.
Waterfront Park
Waterfront Park provides a more modern yet equally charming setting along the Cooper River. Known for its iconic Pineapple Fountain, the park is a peaceful escape where visitors can sit on swings overlooking the water, watch boats glide by, and enjoy the serene atmosphere. It’s an ideal spot for both quiet moments and scenic photos, especially at sunset when the sky paints the harbor in warm hues.
Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum is one of the Charleston area’s premier attractions and a must-visit for history enthusiasts. Located on Charleston Harbor in nearby Mount Pleasant, the museum is centered around the historic WWII aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, where visitors can explore flight decks, living quarters, and exhibits that bring naval history to life. Patriots Point is also home to the destroyer USS Laffey, the immersive Vietnam Experience, the Medal of Honor Museum, and numerous military aircraft displays. With nearly one million square feet of exhibits, interactive experiences, and waterfront views of Charleston Harbor, the museum offers a fascinating look at American military and maritime history while honoring the service and sacrifice of those who served.
Must-do's and where to eat
To truly experience Charleston, your must-do activities should include a carriage tour or an Old Town trolley tour. These guided experiences offer a comfortable way to explore the city’s historic districts while carriage and trolley guides tell fascinating stories about its past and present. Whether you’re riding behind gentle horses through narrow streets or hopping on and off a trolley at key landmarks, these tours provide a deeper appreciation of Charleston’s charm, history, and character.
Another must-do is the Charleston City Market. The market is a lively hub that reflects the city’s culture and craftsmanship. Spanning several blocks, this historic market dates back over two centuries and is filled with local vendors offering handmade goods, sweetgrass baskets, artwork, and regional treats. It’s the perfect place to meet local artisans, learn about traditional Gullah craftsmanship, and pick up meaningful souvenirs that embody Charleston’s heritage.
There were 2 places that made our eat-out list: Church and Union Charleston and Saltwater Cowboys on Shem Creek
The Church and Union is located next to the City Market at the eastern end, by E Bay Street. The restaurant is filled with old church stained glass windows and offers traditional American cuisine. The artwork on the ceiling and arches are the entirety of the book “The Art of War.” Also, when you bill comes, it comes as a bookmark within a paperback copy of The Art of War. The food was very good, the staff was super helpful and friendly, and my wife raved over the Morrocan Meatballs. Definitely worth the experience.
Saltwater Cowboys is on the southern side, across the water from Shem Creek Park in Mount Pleasant. The restaurant features Southern-style seafood, BBQ, and Lowcountry favorites on the waterfront, with dockside seating. We had the Deviled Eggs and Mexican Street Corn Dip (both were Outstanding!) and Smoked Biscuit and Fried Grouper Sandwich as our appetizers and dinner plates. It had great outside seating and live music was available outside.
Be aware that South Carolina has a Restaurant & Prepared Meals tax. Prepared foods are subject to the statewide 6% sales tax plus local and county hospitality taxes which brings the total tax on meals to around 10% but can be higher (Myrtle Beach is at 11.5%).
Another place we really wanted to go, but unfortunately ran out of time was Callie's Little Hot Biscuit. We're definitely going back to Charleston and this has made the top of our list to his next time. If you go, remember to order the Baker’s Dozen of mini biscuits.
Here are some pics from our trip.
